Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a medical metric used to classify weight categories based on height and weight. It acts as an easy screening tool to identify whether an individual is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. It is computed as: BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)^2.

Standard BMI Classifications

The World Health Organization (WHO) divides BMI scores into four main categories:

BMI Range Weight Classification Health Risk Association
Less than 18.5 Underweight Nutritional deficiency, lower immunity
18.5 to 24.9 Normal Weight Minimal health risks, optimal cardiovascular safety
25.0 to 29.9 Overweight Increased heart and hypertension risks
30.0 or Higher Obese High risk for diabetes, joint pain, and metabolic syndromes

Limitations of BMI Measurements

While BMI is a reliable indicator for the average population, it does have limitations. Because it only accounts for total weight, it cannot distinguish between muscle mass and fat tissue. An athletic weightlifter with high muscle density may score as "overweight" or "obese" according to standard BMI calculations, despite having extremely low body fat percentages.
